Australian Cybersecurity Associate Moves to London
Overview
Candidate: Cybersecurity Associate
Move: Top-tier law firm in Australia to UK firm in London
Level: 3PQE
The Process
Many Australian lawyers aspire to work in London. However, with tighter market conditions and tough competition, achieving this goal in 2024 is no small feat. One Cybersecurity associate turned their London aspirations into reality through determination, strategic planning, and the guidance of a London-based legal recruiter.
The candidate, a 3PQE Cyber lawyer at a reputable firm, sought the advice of Tito Ayantunde, a respected Senior Consultant in London. Tito advised patience, suggesting they wait for the market to improve before initiating their job search. As recruitment activity began to pick up towards the end of 2023, Tito collaborated with the lawyer to refine their CV and prepare for the upcoming job hunt.
By late 2023, the candidate’s original firm introduced the idea of an internal move. While considering this option, the lawyer continued to work closely with Tito, who leveraged his connections to secure an interview with a prestigious international firm in London. Tito facilitated two interviews before the Christmas break, ensuring the candidate was thoroughly prepared.
Entering 2024, the candidate had offers from two competing law firms. Thanks to Tito's negotiation skills, the lawyer received an offer from the leading international law firm, which included a generous £5K signing bonus and sponsorship, along with paid flights to facilitate the relocation process. The lawyer was delighted with the offer and accepted it shortly thereafter.
Reflecting on the journey, the candidate expressed gratitude for Tito's guidance. Trusting Tito proved pivotal in unlocking opportunities that might have otherwise been missed, highlighting the importance of collaboration with a recruiter who understands your goals and is committed to realising them.
Recruiter Insight
The last year or so has been quite tricky for Aus-qualified associates to move over. With this said, UK firms value Australian lawyers and will engage with those with the right expertise. Those with at least 3 years of experience from a top-tier firm in Australia, like this candidate, should look into options. I have found that those within more niche practice areas have a good chance of success as it can be harder for firms in London to source Uk-qual talent. Tech and data lawyers are in demand, but different firms require different expertise within them, so not all lawyers are appropriate.''
