Candidate: In-house Counsel (Commercial Litigation)

Level: 3 PQE

Move: In-house to US Law Firm

Location: London

Background

Our London Legal Recruiter, Andrew François, began conversations with this candidate at the end of 2024. During their initial discussion, Andrew quickly identified that, despite the candidate’s current in-house role, they possessed the skills and experience necessary for a successful transition back into private practice—the candidate’s ultimate career goal. While the candidate enjoyed their in-house role, they expressed a strong desire to return to "the pace of private practice" and highlighted salary as another motivating factor.

The Process

Andrew had been in ongoing discussions with a partner at a leading US firm in London who was seeking a commercial litigation associate with expertise in both litigation and international arbitration. Recognising a perfect match, Andrew presented this opportunity to the candidate, along with details of other suitable firms and roles available in the market. The US firm, in particular, was highly responsive and expressed strong interest in the candidate’s prior experience, which quickly led to an interview.

The Outcome

Although the typical recruitment process can take 2-3 months from submitting a CV to receiving an offer, this candidate was thrilled to receive an offer after just two rounds of interviews. While they were pleased with the offer, they wanted to ensure a good cultural fit within the team and requested to meet with other associates at the firm. Following these meetings, the candidate felt confident in their decision and happily accepted the offer. They are now eager to begin this new chapter at the US firm, where they look forward to contributing to its success and advancing their own career.

Recruiter Insight

"Timing in the process is extremely important, and although the candidate (given their obvious quality) had other viable lateral options, we ensured they were introduced to the most appropriate firm for what they were looking for - taking into consideration all the requirements they needed satisfied in their new position.
The reason why we were able to assist in such a way was due to the relationships we’ve managed to build and maintain in the city, so combining Sonder's deep market knowledge, coupled with our strong client connections, finding the right opportunity is sometimes only a phone call away!" - Andrew François (London Legal Recruiter)
