Candidate: Commercial Litigation Associate

Level: Class of 2020

Move: AmLaw 30 to AmLaw 10 Firm (+Sign-on)

Location: New York

Background:

In September 2024, our New York legal recruiter, Andrew Scholz, connected with a commercial litigation associate seeking new opportunities. Her priorities included:

  • Stronger mentorship: A firm with a culture that supports junior lawyers' growth.
  • Clear path to partnership: A defined trajectory for career advancement.
  • Greater exposure to trial work: Opportunities to gain hands-on litigation experience.

Understanding these specific goals, Andrew curated a list of firms that not only matched her criteria but also aligned with her long-term aspirations.

The Journey:

Tailored Approach to Interviews:
The candidate received invitations to interview with two AmLaw 10 firms. Recognizing the importance of cultural fit, she requested in-person meetings with associates at both firms to gain deeper insight into their operations, values, and work environment.

Managing Multiple Processes:
While leaning toward one firm, the candidate was concurrently pursuing a third opportunity at another Big Law firm. Timing became critical as her preferred offer was set to expire before the final interview at the third firm.

Proactive Problem-Solving:
Andrew facilitated conversations with HR to expedite the candidate’s last interview, ensuring she had all the information needed to make an informed decision. His advocacy allowed her to evaluate all options without pressure, ensuring a confident choice.

The Outcome:
With Andrew’s expertise and guidance, the candidate accepted an offer at her top-choice AmLaw 10 firm, complete with a $10,000 sign-on bonus. The role provides the mentorship, partnership trajectory, and trial exposure she was seeking, positioning her for long-term career success.

Key Takeaways for Aspiring BigLaw Associates:

  • Prioritize Your Needs: Identify what’s most important to your career growth—whether it’s mentorship, clear advancement opportunities, or specific practice areas.
  • Leverage Industry Expertise: A skilled recruiter can tailor your job search, streamline processes, and negotiate on your behalf.
  • Dig Deeper into Culture: Conversations with current associates at potential firms are invaluable in understanding a firm’s environment and ensuring it’s the right fit.
  • Be Strategic About Timing: Balancing multiple offers and interviews requires proactive planning and negotiation to avoid missed opportunities.

Recruiter Insights:

When I speak to an associate for the first time, my number 1 priority is understanding their motivations for a move.  In this case, I was able to keep those in mind throughout the process and was able to find a firm that covered all of these priorities.  It was a pleasure to have played a role and making this happen!  - Andrew Scholz, New York Legal Recruiter
