Benefits of Networking and Why Every Lawyer Needs to Spend Time on it
Are you a lawyer who dreads the thought of networking? We hate to be the messenger of bad news, but it may be time to reconsider how you approach networking after hearing why this may be the very thing to double down on in your legal career…
Brainstorming – likeminded individuals
Attending events on industry related topics gets you in the the same room as like minded individuals who you will have a lot in common with. This gives you a chance to be yourself and discuss topics of interest with professionals within your industry. You have the opportunity to bounce ideas off each other and discuss topical issues i.e new regulations or recent judgements in turn building your knowledge.
Creating an image/status
Do you ever notice when you attend networking events you see the same people? It is important that you are leveraging on that and making sure you speak to these people. This is how you build your network and in turn grows your status within your industry. Earning a client’s trust is a long-term process and one which you need to be committed to, your connections are your network and they can be what take your career to the next level.
New opportunities
By attending networking events and getting out in meeting new people comes new opportunities. The phrase “being there at the right time in the right place” rings true here and so many fascinating opportunities and relationships have begun over a coffee or a wine. Put yourself out there and you will be surprised as to what will come across your path.
Small talk is an art
I remember when I was in university, I was waiting tables during my holidays. I remember the first table I served, and underestimating the skill of being able to go up to a stranger and begin a conversation – it takes practice and attending networking events are a fantastic way of getting out your comfort zone and perfecting the art of small talk. Find an icebreaker and use it to your advantage!
Confidence
Attending successful events and speaking to new people builds your confidence and self belief which can not only help you personally but also professionally. Speaking to other industry experts in a professional setting sets you up for skills you can use in future interviews and when pitching to future clients for work.
